He's Alive!

smiling jack
Believe it or not, I'm still here despite the relative inactivity in my own journal. I regularly read my Flist/Circle and comment occasionally, but my journal's been quiet due to all the busy. Specifically, I haven't been posting lately because I've recently rejoined the ranks of the full-time employed, hooray!!

Dear friends, I am pleased to announce that I'm now the Operations Manager at MassEquality! *bows*

This is my first non-volunteer nonprofit job since I used to canvass for social change organizations way back in my early post-college days, and I'm really enjoying it so far. I've got great co-workers, an awesome boss, a nice office environment, and a manageable commute via public transit. I also get to Do All The Things To Make The Office Go, which is pretty exciting.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, I've been re-reading Charitable Getting by the awesome copperbadge. The book is even more entertaining now that I work for a nonprofit. At least we don't have a gong in the office.

Congratulations also to browngirl on her new job! Perhaps we should celebrate together over a platter of tasty bivalves sometime soon...

While I'm at it, I'd like to wish a Happyhappy Birthday to the wonderful tigerbright! May your year ahead be full of blessings and all good things!

May all of us receive good news, positive changes, and interesting opportunities this year...

Happyhappy Birthday to Meeee!

bright green road
Hard to believe it's been another whole trip around the Sun again! You'd think I'd be used to it by now, after my 50th time doing it. :)

I went to bed last night with the first of many "Happy Birthday"s from a sleepy Intrepid Arachnid, and woke up to a pile of birthday greetings on Facebook (thanks, friends!) and a wee box full of tiny Doctors sitting on my keyboard! I think they're stitch markers (always handy around here), but they could be charms, I suppose. Either way, they're awesome!

Today's birthday plans include a short shift at one of my joblets, followed by a hot tub soak at the glorious Inman Oasis and late lunch at the S&S Deli with my Awesome GF, and then a Solstice ritual with friends. Then on Solstice Proper, we're attending a wedding *waves at femmequixotic and noeon* and then I'll be making mac and cheese to take to our friends' annual Yule party for evening revelry and feasting.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and Bright Solstice Blessings to those who mark the occasion!

Greetings from Lovely North Carolina!

bright green road
Once again, it's been about a month since I last posted--mea culpa! As usual, I'm either too busy with stuff to post, or too tired to post from all the busy-ness. Such is life.

I'm posting this from my cousin's computer in beautiful Raleigh, NC, where I arrived this morning underslept and very hungry. A trip to the Waffle House was the perfect cure for the latter, followed by a long nap once we returned to cousin's house. I'm here to help celebrate my second cousin's 70th birthday, which will be filled with family members who I haven't seen in years (with the exception of the Birthday Girl's sister, who I saw briefly last summer as she and her family had a layover in Boston on their way to Ireland on holiday).

This is also the first time I've flown since December, 2008, when I took a long trip to England to surprise cheshcat for her birthday and to celebrate my own 45th birthday and observe Yule in style with not just one but two Pantos (the first starring the oh-so-shiny John Barrowman) and a very early morning trip to Stonehenge. Very tight finances are mostly to blame, and also some concern about potential security theatre shenanigans at the airport. I'm happy to say that the security screening was close to the same as I remembered from the last time I flew, and as uneventful. So that's one more area of anxiety about travel conquered!

I'm expecting that there will be much fun, food, drink, and that I'll be hoarse from talking to so many people by the time I head back to the airport. And that I'll continue to be sleep-deprived for much of the weekend, but hopefully I'll be punchy and amused instead of cranky about it.

In other news, our lovely Sulis has now joined Diana in being 8 years old. She's become even more of an ADVENTUR-CAT than she was previously, and can often be found walking along the top of the deck room curtains, scaling the bookshelves, and making mighty leaps to and from the tops of the kitchen cabinets.

I have a bunch of tabs open with cool stuff to share with y'all, but it'll have to wait until I get back home and regain enough brain cells to deal with the massive linkola. I hope you're all having a good weekend and staying comfortable and safe in whatever weather you may be experiencing in your neck of the woods. Catch you all on the flip side!

Meowy Belated Birthday!

bright green road
In the midst of all the chaos and uncertainty of last week, I failed to note here that April 15th was HRH Diana, Princess of Wails' 8th birthday (observed), followed a day later by our Not-So-Tiny Feline Overlord Lakshmi's 5th birthday. So please join me in raising a pinch of nip and a bowl of tunafish water to the birthday girls!

In other news, thanks to the Awesome GF, I've been introduced to Crash Course. And thanks to episode 3 of Crash Course World History, I've been earwormed with this classic.

Otherwise, it's been a fairly quiet weekend. The Awesome GF and I watched Doctor Who last night (our verdict: fun and cool and certainly better than the previous couple of eps), and today I got to have brunch and hang out with an old friend who is visiting Boston and a half dozen other friends as well. Here's hoping that this coming week is much quieter, calmer, and more productive than last week turned out to be!

P.S. This? Is awesome! And so is this but in a different way!

Snow Day

bright green road
Hello the Internets!

I'm all hunkered down for the latest episode of SnOMG: New England in my warm flannel kitty pants, thick socks, and my ancient "We're Here, We're Queer, We Have E-Mail" t-shirt, drinking coffee and being mobbed by cats who love me for my body heat and mad cat-petting skillz. So far, the snow is nothing to freak out about, but the wind is definitely picking up. However, we have dry wood by the fireplace, candles all about, the aforementioned cats, and plenty of food so I think we'll survive just fine. So I'm lounging around, catching up on reading, viewing, and knitting, and getting a load of laundry done while I'm at it. I'm also sending good birthing vibes across the Atlantic to [personal profile] nanaya and [personal profile] alextiefling. Welcome to the world, Babby!!

So, here are a few Snow Day links for you...

One of the items on my viewing list for today is this episode of Pioneers of Television, because who didn't love the campy antics of 1960s Batman??

Those of you who are Jenny and Vastra fans will no doubt appreciate this gorgeous piece of fan art.

I've recently discovered the vidblog The Perennial Plate, which has short episodes on sustainable food and adventurous eating. The current series is on international food and travel.

Always apropos for weather like this: Cast On episode 1.5

ETA: Hello Kitty... IN SPAAAAAAACE!!!

Aaaand

How to make guacamole... in the awesomest way possible!

Stay warm, dry, and safe, my fellow denizens of the Frozen North! *salutes*

Turn Again, Turn Again...

bright green road
Greetings to you all from the other side of the Wheel! We made it through another Longest Night, spinning onward to a new calendar, gradually lengthening days, and eventually to a warmer, gentler season of growing and change. We still have quite a bit of Winter to live through, but already the tide has turned.

This year's Yule celebrations were marked among community and good friends, with plenty of food and drink, joyous ritual, and wonderful conversations. Plans were made for the near future, potential courses charted, and hopes expressed for good fortune, abundance, health, and happiness. And then there was a lot of sleeping.

December's gone by unusually fast this year, it seems to me. Wasn't it just a couple of days ago that we celebrated the Awesome GF's birthday, and then my own? Didn't we just get home from our wonderful, belated Thanksgiving feast with friends in upstate NY? And isn't the month simply jam-packed with Sagittarian birthdays? It feels like this month was telescoped into half as many days as usual.

I hope you all had an easy passage through the Dark, and may love and joy attend you through the remainder of the year.

Jul. 18th, 2012

bright green road
Sorry for the continued radio silence from this little corner of the world, but I've been cycling through rounds of busyness and ennui, neither of which give me much time or energy for updating my journal(s). But I have an unplanned day off, and there are occasions to remark upon and note, so you get an update!

First off, the birthdays! Happyhappy Belated Birthday to my good friend and awesome mead-maker lindenschmidt, and to two of my favorite musicians: bettyw and nw1! And also, a very happy 100th birthday last weekend to the late, great Woody Guthrie!

I also send out best wishes for a smooth and speedy recovery to anarchist_nomad. Best wishes as well to [personal profile] acelightning in her recovery and ongoing treatments--success to the LINAC! Also, congratulations are due to gyades for his work on Fermilab's contribution to the Higgs boson search and the analysis of their official results! Cheers also go out to shadesong on her Rhysling Award for best short poem for "The Library, After". Woo-hoo!

In Kickstarter Land, one of my favorite podcasts, 99% Invisible, is running a Kickstarter campaign to fund its 3rd season. Within 24 hours, the initial goal of $42K was reached, but there's still plenty of time to support this awesome little radio show about architecture and design. The project's stretch goal is participation-based: show host and producer Roman Mars is aiming for 5,000 backers at any level, and the minimum donation is only $1. So give the show a listen, watch the really cool Kickstarter video, and consider joining the proud legion (nearly 2,000 as of this writing!) of the show's fans! A challenge grant has been offered to go along with the stretch goal, so if the stretch goal is reached your donation may go even further to help make the show better than it already is. I hope that Roman Mars decides to offer those t-shirts as regular (and cheaper) show merch after the campaign is over, because I want a Plimsoll shirt (I know at least one other person on my flist who would appreciate one as well) but I can't afford it at the fundraiser price.

And in another corner of my life, some folks from the medical/health team at Occupy Boston are running a street medic training in just under a month. I've put on my Logistics Lad hat for this one, since I've been involved in organizing a couple of these trainings. I'm doing my usual task of running Registration, plus I created a Web site for the training. I'll also be working behind the scenes to stage manage things during the training. To learn more about the training, and to donate, volunteer, or register if you're local to Boston and interested in joining us, visit the Web site or drop me an e-mail, PM, or comment. General registration is now open, so check it out!

Happy Catmas!

hi!
Today is Lakshmi's 4th birthday, which means that yesterday was Diana's 7th birthday (observed)! The festivities largely involve laying about the house in various states of flatness, it being suddenly hot here in the less-than-frozen North. Although there might be treats later, if they manage to not kill each other or other cats. So, in honor of the occasion, here are the traditional birthday girl pics:

So please raise a glass of tuna-can water and a generous pinch of catnip to the birthday girls!

Other than that, things have been busy enough around here to keep me from updating often. The Awesome GF and I have been out and about, I've gone deeper into debt to keep Safira running a while longer, the peepers are serenading us nightly, the trees are unfurling their leaves, tiny flowers are popping up everywhere, and life is good mostly. I hope you all can say much the same!

In honor of the day (and the large number of open tabs and recently added Read It Later links I've got), here's a Marathon Monday Linkdump:

  • I certainly wouldn't mind this showing up in my Yule stocking.

  • Humon, the person behind Scandinavia and the World, does other artwork as well. Among her recent work on DeviantART are these two QI-related pieces (the second link is likely NSFW, depending on the rules of your workplace regarding nudity). Also recommended is her Skimpy Outfits series (probably NSFW) and her series of humans illustrating animal sex--cute and educational!

  • Although it's traditional to post Tom Lehrer's "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" as a springtide anthem, I recently got earwormed by this song, so you get a link to it instead.

  • If you ever wondered how Peeps are made, wonder no more!

  • Here's a delightful animation of the three New Who Doctors. More cool stuff can be found here.

  • And in case I haven't posted this yet, here's a link to the brilliant mashup world of artist James Hance.

Stay cool, everyone!

Well, that happened.

bright green road
For a special St. Pat's Day gift, the Universe gave me a smashed front quarter panel late last night. Gee, thanks, Universe! *headdesk* There I was, driving home from an Equinox ritual, perfectly sober and minding my own business, and then... crunch!

It's rather surreal to see someone in a small sedan sloooowly turn towards you in an intersection and then keep driving at you, despite your honking horn and the "No, really, NO!!" look on your face. For some bizarre (yet fortunate, in the scheme of things) reason, crazy!drunk!driver then decided to take a last-minute swerve onto the sidewalk to my right, crunching into my passenger side bumper, front fender, and lights, then continued around my car and up the wrong side of the street, hitting a pickup truck behind me and no doubt causing other mayhem that I was not witness to. I don't know where the guy was going, but he was determined to get there.

I pulled over and checked out the damage, then walked back to the impact site, where I found a wheel cover from crazy!drunk!driver's car--oh look, it was a Ford! Evidence!--then I walked up to the pulled-over pickup truck that was hit shortly after I was, and joined the driver and someone who lived across the street. The police were called, the cops in the next town over were alerted to the oncoming driver, and there was nothing to do for a few minutes but commiserate with the driver of the pickup and shake our heads in disbelief until the closest local cop arrived to take our statements and registration info so he could make his official incident report. Happily, I could still drive my car, and while the plastic shield over the right front headlight is mostly gone, the light itself was still functioning, so I could even do so safely. Neither I nor the people in the pickup that crazy!drunk!driver smacked into were injured, so that was good. I have many blessings to count wrt this incident, but really, I'd rather have skipped it. I've now got stupid paperwork to file, an appraisal to take care of tomorrow, the body work to arrange (I'll most likely go back to the guys who fixed up Safira after her unfortunate smash-up last year), and probably more paperwork after that. But that's all routine and a relatively mild nuisance, considering. May all of our vehicular mishaps be as inconsequential!

In other, better news, my ever-awesome Awesome GF has a job again and a cool volunteer gig; there have been peepers loudly doing their thing in the evenings recently; and several friends have had (or, in the case of [profile] sea_dark_wine, are having) birthdays since I last posted, and there have been two marriages within my flist/circle, so here's to all of you who have spiffy things to celebrate! And Happy Spring to all!

Now We Are 8

bright green road
in Cat years, according to Auntie Wikipedia. Yep, I've just finished another circle 'round the Sun and am celebrating with a fairly quiet day off, during which I had yummy eggs for breakfast, read lots of wonderful birthday wishes from friends via various social media, finished off the latest installment of Jacky Faber's adventures, took a walk 'round Breakheart Reservation, visited the chiropractor for a tune-up, got a surprise Birthday Call from Chiron Beta Prime (home of cheshcat and anarchist_nomad) with extra-special cameos by weegoddess and J, and had a delicious curry dinner with the Awesome GF. Now we're back home at Summanulla with ice cream in the freezer for dessert later, a bottle of raspberry mead, and we've got the James May's Man Lab Christmas Special cued up for us to enjoy. (We were going to watch the BAAAAAABY SLOOOOOOOOTHS but the damn Tivo erased it. TIIIIIVOOOOO!!! Grrrr!!! *shakes fist*)

Thanks to everyone for all the birthday wishes so far! It's been a relatively uneventful birthday, but you know, I'm fine with that.

Happy Kitteh Birthdaze!

bright green road
It's hard to believe that three years ago, I got an e-mail announcing the birth of a certain Not-So-Tiny Feline Overlord and her 5 siblings. And so it came about that, graced with a large and loud set of vocal apparatus, HRH Lakshmi rules us all!

And not to be overlooked, three years previous to that, our Madcap Princess, HRH Diana, Princess of Wails, made her unannounced appearance in the world in a feral cat colony, where she and her siblings and mum were scooped up, given proper treatment and care, and taken to a nice foster home where they grew and played and had a lovely kittenhood. And then we met her and almost instantly knew she was meant to be ours.

So, raise a glass and a generous pinch of catnip to our Birthday Girls! Woo-hoo!!

Yay!

bright green road
The Goddess gave me snow for my birthday! Not enough to keep me from getting to a chair massage gig and enjoying my evening with the Awesome GF, although the traffic in Cambridge was really annoying and slow. We went to Inman Oasis for a soak in one of their private hot tubs, then wandered across the street to the S&S Deli for dinner. We had yummy fish & chips in generous servings. And then we drove home in the remains of the snow.

I came home to many lovely birthday greetings and good wishes from my friends out there in InternetLand, which made me happy. I also had a couple of nice birthday chats with other friends. So all in all, it's been a very nice day, relatively low-key and smooth. I got to do what I wanted to, and enjoy it with someone special, so it's all good.

I hope you all had a good day too.

And, because my brain is like Swiss cheese

hi!
I managed to forget the fact that, five years, one week and one day ago, a tiny yellow kitten was born in a barn somewhere in Kentucky. Through a series of odd and fortuitous events, she ended up in the Western suburbs of Chicago, where I spotted her with anarchist_nomad, and after some consultation with sunastria, I brought her home. She's the most well-traveled kitty in our little feline family, but she seems to have settled down happily (with the possible exception of having to put up with the Not-So-Tiny Feline Overlord).

Happy Belated Birthday, Sulis!

Birthday Girl #2

lakshmi!
One afternoon, two years ago, I got an e-mail from a friend telling me that her Siamese cat had given birth to 6 babies. One died, sadly, but the rest survived and thrived. One of them was our Lakshmi, She Who Rules Us All. Our Not-So-Tiny Feline Overlord is 2 years old today, hooray!

Happy Birthday, Lakshmi!

ETA: If you're feeling nostalgic or in need of teh cute, check out my Kittens tag for many pictures of Lakshmi and her sibs and mum.

Birthday Girl #1

diana!
It's hard to believe that 5 years ago, a tiny brown tabby kitten was born in or around an abandoned house that had been taken over by a feral cat colony, and then that kitten and her sibs and mum were taken in and given a foster home to grow up in, and then she came to live with us. 5 years! But she still plays with her tail, so we know she's still a kitten after all.

Happy Birthday, HRH Diana, Princess of Wails!

First, Happyhappy Birthday to two of my favorite physicists: anarchist_nomad and [personal profile] tea (aka demotu). Also, Happy Pi Day, everyone! I have not yet decided which sort of pie to consume in celebration of the occasion, but I am resolved that THERE WILL BE PIE!

In other, less happy, news, I came home from the Awesome GF's Seekrit Hideaway to find water seeping into the basement. *shakes fist at the rain* Thank the Gods for sump pumps and other modern tools that help move water from point A to point B with minimal human interference or effort! But still, argh.

Later on, after I get back from rehearsal and have consumed my (currently still theoretical) pie, I will flog the hell out of our Fabulous Show here, complete with poster image and all the shiny details. Because I want to see you all there!

Stay dry, everyone! Even if I can't!

Happy Birthday, bodlon!

Welcome to your third fourth decade on this cozy little backwater planet! May your stay here continue to be as full of awesome as you are (which is quite awesome indeed)!

And to all a good Groundhog Day, Happy Imbolc, etc.!
